Pont de Tolbiac: The Pont de Tolbiac is the result of urban expansion into the Eastern part of the capital in the second half of the 19th century. Between the Pont National upstream and the Pont de Bercy downstream there was indeed a considerable gap - some 120 m - and an intermediate bridge between the two banks of the Seine very quickly became necessary. The municipal council voted to build it in 1876 and work on the bridge - financed by Paris and the national government - began in 1879.A conventional design from the engineers BERNARD and PEROUSE was preferred to a far more innovative project from Gustave Eiffel. Work was completed in 1882 and since then it has enjoyed a completely uneventful history, apart from being hit by a crashing English plane in 1943.
